Re: Replanting JIs

Clarence, My garden is in Volcano, Ca. We are at a 3,000 foot
elevation. We get approx 2 to 3 feet of snow/yr and the snow we get
doesn't last long. We get lots of rain. I have only been growing TB's
for the past 3 yrs. The ones that I put in the sunniest location do the
best. I've had a few that only bloomed and didn't held any new growth
I replace half my soil with a soil conditioner bought at OSH or Home
Depot. When I take the original irises and devide them I replace the
soil with a good planting mix bought at OSH. Fertilized them well too.
This last spring I never put fertilizer on them and they did great.
Someone must have liked them , they came in and took my flowers and
later on devided them in the ground and I never knew they were gone
until I started deviding them. I knew something was wrong because the
fans were smaller.I
never understood why a iris would have to be put into another location
each year if one would just replace the soil. We have lots of pine and
ceder trees so make sure that I keep the needles off the ground so not
to produce a real acid soil. I understand irises like a slight acid
soil so if I keep the soil around 6.0 they do well. Least they have
till now. Why can't you do the same with Japanese Irises? I know
nothing about them.
