A national test garden system was tried, several times I think....and led to
many problems, keeping the gardens going, getting reports, etc, etc....and so
the AIS Board discontinued it...way before my time. But there is nothing
wrong with AIS Regions sponsoring their own test gardens, like Region 20 does
with the Dr. Loomis Garden. I personally think it would be a good thing for
a Region to do. Brings in lots of new guest irises and seedlings (which most
iris breeders donate to the Region to use as they choose after 3
years...which helps regional auctions), lets judges evaluate how a new irises
do in their region, and can be a very beautiful park type affair.
But I suspect it will have to be the individual regions who take the
initiative. I seriously doubt whether the AIS Board would want to try
running a national program again because it didn't work very well before from
what I understand. Clarence Mahan in VA
