Yes, p. 36 in The Japanese Iris says, "In a study by Swearengen pH levels
from 5.5 to 6.5 were quite satisfactory, with the best growth occurring
at pH 5.8 (Swearengen 1964).Too much calcium, one of the mineral
nutrients utilized by plants, is harmful (Marschner 1986),.....etc."
There is a reference to a garden where Japanese irises were lost
at soil reduced to pH 4.5 and at a still further reduction to 4.0 pH
ALL plants died or were seriously affected (Delmez 1989).
So, that is why I said my soil is good for JI's at a pH level of
5.7 and low calcium.
Ellen Gallagher e_galla@moose.ncia.net Zone 3 and happy
because we are STILL enjoying our Japanese irises
at very good bloom!
