There are a couple of reasons for this happening. One reason is that some
judges do not visit gardens outside their area and don't see the plant in poor
condition. Some tend instead to "Vote the Picture" in iris catalogs, rather
than for the iris.
Still another explanation is that there is a greater concentration of AIS
judges on the West Coast than anywhere else. That "block" vote for an iris that
does well on the West Coast in their gardens is hard to beat. It's kinda hard
for a judge NOT to vote for an iris when it does great in his/her garden, but
not in gardens hundreds of miles away under different conditions!
