for a number of years. Yes, the membership swells by 30 at a clip - no, most
of them don't stay - but a small percentage DO become viable members... and I
e nudge that got them involved! Each year we
probably add 2 or 3 "worker bees" to our club... and THAT's good increase, in
MY book!

Kathy Guest wrote that and I will add:
The point of the iris give-away is not necessarily to get new members to
stay in the organization, but to get iris to people who didn't have them
yesterday!! to spread the word about iris, to tell them more about culture,
and sources, and etc. The folks who are new members get the Bulletin, the
ESIS (Region 2) newsletter, plus WNYIS's own IrisBorer newsletter and thereby
get all the cultural, etc, info for a year, and assuming that info is
informative, WNYIS will have fulfilled its mission as well as that of AIS.
And getting two or three folks to stay and be helpful in the group is a
bonus!! I think that capturing the youth (that's anyone younger than me!)
is the future -- young families and children need to be carefully brought
into the action of the Society -- and these folks may not be able to get
to meetings and such at this particular time in their lives, busy with
kids, etc., and so we have to keep them on board a long time and offer
freebies and picnics and have them make cookies, etc, (repeating Clarence's
suggestions) (can I get acopy of those job descriptions from ANYBODY??)
One of the ways to keep these folks in the group is to offer good programs
with slides and interesting speakers -- connect with the stable members by
having that program a judges' training -- and raffles and drawings, etc. etc.
