Re: re:Sisyrinchium

Hello All:

My Sisyrinchium augustifolium (Blue eyed Grass) has produced a bumper crop
of seeds which I have no use for. I would be happy to share these with
anyone interested. Just let me know your address by E-mail. The plants
were collected years ago from my parents farm in central Michigan (zone 5)
but are hardy here in zone 3. In their setting in the meadow they are
scrawny but in the garden they become like little siberian iris about 6-8
inches high with little 1/2 inch blue flowers with yellow centers. They are
not invasive but grow like little siberians gradually getting bigger clumps.
Blooming time is spring and the flowers are only open during the sun.

Following is the description from Wyman's Gardening Encyc.

" 6-10" Zone 3 A member of the iris family, this dainty, grasslike, tufted
plant bears upright, bluish-green, linear leaves and leaflike stems
terminating in 1-4 small, blue, starlike flowers having 6 notched perianth
segments. Each flower lasts only a few hours. The fruit is a tiny, round,
3 celled capsule. It is a spring flowering plant, native to southern Canada
and throughout much of the US requiring wet soil (mine doesn't) and full
sun. A charming plant for the wild garden, it may be propagated by division
of the plants in spring or fall, or by seeds sown late in winter."
