Just a thought, but maybe its time for those of us who often have voted for
non TBs to start thinking that maybe it isn't in the best interest of the
other types of irises to be eligible for the Dykes. When one has to say that
the Dykes is the highest award a Siberian or Japanese iris can win, and we
know a cultivar in these classes is not even a viable candidate, we may be
doing worse than kidding ourselves...we may be slighting the truly
outstanding Siberians and Japanese. That is, they were eligible but did not
win!

This is my opinion, and only my opinion, i.e. I am not speaking for AIS or
any other official body. But, if there were justice in picking THE BEST
IRIS, surely the Siberian PINK HAZE would have won the award. Likewise, the
MTB ROSEMARY'S DREAM surely would have won such an award. Surely, a Japanese
such as THE GREAT MOGUL would have won. Even though these I have mentioned
have been around for quite some time, their popularity among those who like
these types remains strong. In their color classes and types, there probably
are none better today. Thus, I have "sort of" concluded that perhaps it
would be best if the Morgan-Wood Medal were the highest award a Siberian
could win, etc.

Just food for thought. Clarence Mahan in VA
