Hi all,
Got the following from Marilyn Harlow (AIS Membership Person - sorry I don't know
proper title), as a result of a discussion we were having. Thought you might be
interested. (She said it was ok to forward it to the list.)
Marilyn writes:
For many years, AIS had a two year system in place for membership. If you
joined between April 1 and September 30, your membership year started as of July
1. If you joined between October 1 and March 31, then your membership year
started as of January 1. This meant that the bulk (larger number) of new
members came in during the summer because that was the fall out from many
affiliates having spring shows and summer sales. Usual number of drop outs from
this time period was about 750. Dues notices had to go out the middle of May.
(A very busy iris time for most of us.) Smaller numbers of new members joined
in the other time period. The usual number of drop outs from this period was
about 500. Usual number of new members over the year was about 1200....in other
words we are staying static.
The calendar year basis membership was not entered into lightly or without a lot
of thought. Other hort associations were questioned and info gathered. The
calendar year basis will allow the membership secretary to more evenly spread
the work over the twelve months. To answer your question about what happens if
one joins in October. ...if one joins between January and Sept. 30, then the
membership year begins the previous January, (same year). If dues are received
from October 1 through December 31, then membership actually starts as of
January 1 (following year.) Those who join at that time will get the new member
packet as well as a complimentary bulletin to hold the interest (hopefully)
until the January bulletin is delivered.
If there is a membership committee, I am the spokesperson. To my knowledge
there is no membership committee as such, so it must be the board members.
Most of us on or near the AIS board are considered volunteers. There are three
paid employees, but the pay is quite nominal, and the "unpaid" portion is
considered volunteerism on our part.
