I've had a couple friends, excellent gardners, lose their spurias.  I think
the prevalent theory now is: keep them watered in the summer so they don't go
dormant, because once dormant they will rot in moist, humid conditions.
Your weather conditions sound very similiar to ours, so I guess i'll have to
try a few spurias-they are elegant.
