I just wanted to put my two cents worth in on the bulletin banter. As a
newcomer to AIS, I have to say that I find the AIS bulletin stimulating. I
appreciate the diversity of the bulletin with its international, scientific,
and contemporary topics. I particularly liked the "Flight Lines" section and
the blow by blow description of recent introductions and proven irises in
Perry Dyer's "Contemporary Views". No publication can be all things to all
people, but as long as diversity and quality are maintained, I think it will
remain an excellent publication.
Warning more comment on AIS board meeting minutes!
As for the board meeting minutes, I believe that publishing meeting minutes
are crucial in maintaining the credibility of organizational leadership.
Everyone should be thankful that the AIS minutes are made available. For
example, at my place of business, it's commonplace to conduct management and
other meetings, record minutes, but never publish them or make them widely
available. Needless to say, this practice of squelching meeting minutes
sows mistrust and at the very least leads to entrenchment of top-down
decision making without accountability and responsibility. I think, for
archival and reference reasons, it makes sense to include the meeting
minutes in the official AIS publication (bulletin).
To end on a positive note, I have a request for information. The HIPS
section sounds very interesting. Could someone please elaborate for list
their experiences with HIPS and what the benefits are of belonging to this
AIS section? Is there an annual sale or trade?
