Re: Alphalfa Pellets

Donna from Wa State: Here are my answers to your questions ::::

1. When I go to the feed store to purchase them, exactly what do I
ask for, and what should I stay away from?
***** The brand I buy is Alfa-Bits, has a picture of a horse on it,
is sold as horse feed at Agway.
2. Do you dig or scratch the pellets in and around the rhizomes?
***** Yes,
3. Can or should alphalfa pellets be used along with superphosphate -
or will the pellets do the job singularly?
**** alfalfa pellets work alone.
4. Should the pellets be added in the spring BEFORE blooming - or now, in the early fall when we are feeding the bed.>
**** Yes, to the first part of this Q, and I donUt feed iris in the fall, and
would advise against it to folks who have cold winters. I would think
that new growth in the fall would be weak growth, not hardened off
and ready for the rigors of winterUs freeze/thaw cycles.
5. What does alphalfa pellets contain that regular fertilizers don't?
****** many kinds of vitamins and minerals and growth goodies.
Besides, they are organic and have fibrous stuff to condition the soil.
Farmers have grown alfalfa to renew a field as well as to provide
feed for livestock -- cows and horses and sheep and whatever as part
of crop rotation.

Thanks to anyone who can clear this up. Donna from WA STATE

Other folks like Dennis Stoneburner will probably have more information, too.
Let us know what you do!!
