Long missing, much travelled Gunnar! It is possible to grow Japanese irises
in some shade, preferably high, filtered shade with at least 4 hours of
direct sun. But they do much better in full sun.
"Rebloomers" is an accepted name in iris circles. Sometimes when we wish to
be scholarly and learned we call them "remontants", a French term originally
applied to roses in the 19th century.
A good rebloomer will give you plenty of bloom in the spring, and will give
you summer/fall bloom dependably every year. (Of course if you dig up and
transplant you cannot expect this...but often even transplanting does not
halt rebloom. There are many stories of getting a rhizome in the mail in
July and having it bloom in September or October. )
For many years we have been having two fall iris shows in AIS Region 4. With
regard to what we call rebloomers, it is not uncommon when a stalk looks like
it is going to open in time for the fall show...but doesn't, for us to call
rebloomers @$!!#**)@!. :) Clarence Mahan in cool and pleasant northern
