Thanks Ellen. I will plant mine the same as you did yours, since yours is doing so well. I'm anxious to see if it is really black ( I'm skeptical about this, will let you know when it blooms). BTW do ypu know what time of year it does bloom?
Ruth- off for the day and babysitting my puppy, who had surgery yesterday

The original species I. chysographes is purple and gold but there
are different color shades, now. It is hardy - better be since I
just planted my first one in July in `the 3rd Zone'. I have it
planted in a very sunny area in a mixed bed of species, Japanese
and Siberians. I planted it like a Siberian - not as deep as a
Japanese iris but down around two inches.
I prepared the bed with compost, aged manure and peat moss -
I didn't have a clue so went with my usual `bog' planting. I
didn't see much sign of new growth for at least three or four
weeks but now it has taken off and is at least 20" tall and very
light green.
It seems to like water and the cold snap we just had seemed to
help it....throwing up new shoots like crazy.
Since we are both novices at I. chrysographes Ruth, we can com-
pare notes next Spring and Summer.
