Teresa--I would go with something a bit more substantial than 2 x 4s. I had
irises in raised beds done with small landscape timbers, and those worked
fairly well--altho the winter freeze-thaw cycles here still moved the
timbers around more than I liked. I'm not sure where you are, but that
might be a consideration. The more mass, the better it'll stay in place.
Also my so-called "pressure-treated" timbers began to disintegrate in a
scant 5 yrs., so I don't think 2 x 4s have much of a life expectancy in a
climate similar to mine.
