Teresa,
When we visited Presby Iris Gardens in Montclair, NJ, all of the beds were
raised, but without any timbers. the soil seem to stay in place on it's
own. We have tried to copy theirs and raised our new beds about 8". they
have gone through some pretty heavy downpours and the soil seems to have
stayed in place quite perfectly. Maybe you shouldn't bother with the
lumber.
