Many years ago Schreiner's tried patenting some of their introductions.
The only name I recall was GIANT ROSE, an enormous thing but with rather
floppy blooms of undistinguished color. Evidently it didn't work, for the
reasons Tom mentions, and they didn't do it again. GIANT ROSE seems to
have sunk beneath the waves for good.
Also I think you have to demonstrate, to get a plant patent, that the
variety is distinct from all others. I think there would be problems with
that for a lot of iris 'varieties'.
