Rima,
Except for spring greens, deer don't eat irises. I am an expert (not expert
on much else but here I shine) on what deer will eat in my area as my garden
is surrounded by an electric fence and unfriendly gate thanks to past losses.
Taking the morning inspection of the garden and counting the losses is a
downer.
You should be aware the losses become greater in September and October as the
deer form herds. The fawns are grown enough to travel and having a large
group in your garden is not unusual. If you have new acquisitions among the
hostas and daylilies (many others) you will have deer.
Traveling down Route 22 (or any north-south road in eastern NY) you will see
herds of hundreds of deer oblivious to cars and photographers.
In spring when some of the irises sprout early they will be grazed also.
Later on they are left alone. If you interplant hosta and daylilies with
iris (I do) the deer will stomp all over the lot damaging the iris. Bambi is
more welcome now that he is not able to cross the fence lines!
Sympathy to Rima.
