Perfect description of a mature iris borer larva! I've seen the same thing
in beardless irises, which are a lot more rot-resistant than bearded
ones--the rhizome just gets hollowed out and the wounds callous over
without rotting. While the growing point has probably been destroyed, such
rhizomes may still sprout increase.
