I really was not going to brag - but when I saw the questions for Scott to
answer, I just couldn't resist! I am actually a proud possessor of this
amazing book. -- about 4 months ahead of time because Santa Claus couldn't
stand not giving it to me now - and I am SO glad! It was ordered by phone to
Australia and Graeme assured that it would be received in 2 days and it was!
Unbelievable - But I have it AND LUCY PAYENS is in tghe book - a slightly
different pose --but STELLA PALISSOT is rhe same --but AZURE ANGEL 's picture
is a photographic feat - and there are numerous others which will make
photographers green and completely intimidate the ordinary picture-takers
(like me). I haven't had time to read it - just dipped into it here and
there, and it is truly a serious tome, but very readable - and it coverss the
bearded , the beardless, the bulbous, and "iris that are not iris" (isn't
that enticing?) and then he goes on about how to llive with iris -
landscaping, potting, and a clever explanation of why people suffer through
showing irises AND how to groom etc (opposite this page are pictures of the
author and the photographer (and they look much too young tohave accomplished
so much!) -- then it goes on abouit buying, and there is a different
approach about hybridizing. There is a fascinating picture of ALPINE JOURNEY
- (fascinating is a word that cannot be overused about the photography --
This particular picture makes me think of Alice-in-Wonderland where she
enters in another world through the looking glass? (it has been a LONG
time since I read the book) --- anyhow it looks like you could enter over
the beard into the depth of an iris ---seeing is almost believing. The two
criticisms: no itemized listing of the Australasian Dykes Medal Winners --
I'm trying to get a collection of those to add to the French, English,
American DM's I have. The othe omission is much more serious - NO, actually
NO mention of REBLOOMING IRISES! That is a major sin as far as I am concerned
-Unfortunately it appears yhat Australian hybridizers don't really pay
attention to that great attribute for this wonderful flower - It is too bad
that this one omission is really a blot on Graeme's escutcheon. Those of you
who are Louisiana lovers will be well rewarded, however - those pictures are
beautiful. Nuff said = Buy and enjoy! Rosalie Figge in the Baltimore area
where it is even hotter and still no rain! (maybe Australian weather came
with the book!) (ryfigge@aol.com
