Rusty,
It sounds as if those Irises you were dividing had gotten a bit
overcrowded and had been paid a visit by the dreaded Iris borer. Cut off
the hollow and dead pieces and throw them in the trash. Keep the healthy
pieces that have fans of leaves and replant those.
Tall Bearded Irises should be divided every third year to prevent
overcrowding. To control the Iris Borer, Remove dead Iris leaves and all
other "litter" from the Iris beds in the late fall and again in the spring.
Also, spray the plants with either Cygon 2E or Lindane when spring growth
reaches six to eight inches tall.
