A couple of people have responded to your posting about hollow rhizomes by
suggesting that you have an iris borer problem. I doubt that is the case.
Under the conditions you described (shade, crowding, neglect) iris rhizomes
will continue to extend themselves without blooming with the only actively
growing part located close to the fan. The older part of the rhizome tends
to dry out and become corky in texture. It is not a case of infection, rot
or insect invasion - merely rhizome senility. Cut off the old dried-up,
hollowed part, replant the fresh tip, and let the iris get on with its
life.
