Concerning misnamings: As some of you may remember from my recent
post about Iris 'Rose' that I bought mislabeled, I wanted to comment
on my general dismay at labeling problems with *all* garden plants. I
have about a 10 - 15 percent failure rate with mail order companies as
well as local purchases with mislabeled plants of all genera. Merchants
and growers really should take more care labeling.
The problem is bad enough for serious collectors, but for general
garden design, it's bad too. For example, I lost a whole year watching
what I thought was the 6 foot tall Rudbeckia 'Autumn Sun' I ordered
by mail turn out to be in fact the 2 foot tall Rudbeckia 'Gold Cup.' And
the what-I-thought-was 'Little Missy' red daylillies purchased in
superb packaging with photos from Costco came out orange. These problems
wreck layout plans, for one thing, and is bad aesthetically. Quality
control on this scale would not be tolerated in other marketing
fields. But then again, these are *only* plants we are talking about
here. ;-) So, is it just 'caveat emptor,' or can we collectively do
something? At least most of the commercial iris people are pretty
good in labeling accurately.
