Thanks a lot, Celia.  I love the story about the dog!  I've just planted
I.unguicularis next to our barn.  My grandmother (not being properly
respectful of Irises) had apparently transplanted hers about 4 times, thrown
four-fifths of it away (would you believe it!), and finally put it in a pot
next to the fence, (where it was half-hidden under a climber) and forgotten
about it.  I think it was her eventual neglect that finally encouraged it to
bloom.  I only hope that she can bear to leave it alone for a while.  (She
is continally shifting all her plants for no apparent reason.  I think that
maybe it gives her something to do in her small garden, whereas we (with
17-and-a-half acres) always seem to have far more to do than we can actually
handle.
