I wash off all incoming beardless and then I soak them in pails with
enough water to cover the roots until planting. I have had some in
their bathtubs for up to 10 days waiting for their new homes. I try
to have their in the ground within a week. I *always* soak Siberians
and Japanese no matter how moist they appear when I open the box.
I feel it gives them a good start. Important point: change the water
in the pails every day so it will not become stagnant.
The only exception to my rule is when I buy SIs and JIs from the
Mountain River Flower Farm where I watch them being dug and put in
moist paper bags for the short ride home. I usually just plant them
right in the ground.
I don't bleach anything and have had no problems whatsoever in my
garden....but then again I don't spray with anything and my garden
is OK. I am not in business and it is against my religion which is
OO = Orthodox Organic. :)) (I would use bleach if I thought I had to.)
Cheers,
Ellen
