The (Grand Canyon x Violet Harmony sib) is 4 generations back, 5 if
counting the result of the crosses.

On average (varies widely!!!) each generation of a LARGE sample of Tall
Beardeds spans just a tad over six years. That's why I put the 30 year
figure on the example. Some hybridizers, when working within their lines,
will show a 2-3 year generational turnover. Anything quicker than that and
you are doing 'paper' breeding -- not really evaluating crosses for quality
and potential.

Of course, when you go out of your line you stack years onto the
generational timeline. Then too, a superb parent such as Rippling Waters
will have a 'mainstream' breeding life that spans better than 30 years.
More plebeian cultivars may only be used in one cross, if that. Speaks
volumes (excepting two way sterility) when an introducer never uses her/his
introduction in further crosses.
