For those in the warmer parts of the USA, the American Horticultural
Society has published a poster sized map of 12 "Heat Zones". The map is
14.95 USD (13.45 USD for members) including shipping, and can be obtained
directly from them by calling (703) 768-5700. In February 1998, they will
be publishing a companion book "The Heat Zone Garden" (price not determined
as yet) that will include a 2000 plants and their heat tolerance.
Rather than being based directly on temperatures as is the USDA Winter
Hardiness map. The Heat Zones are based on the number of DAYS above 86
degrees F (30C). Unfortunately, relative humidity/wind factors are not
included.
I have not been able (as yet) to find how this system compares to the
unpublished USDA heat zone system.
My copy of the map should arrive in a couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted
once I have actually seen it.
