Walter, the original mule track & later wagon road thru the narrow
canyon was a "shelf" road that basically followed the path of the creek.
The modern 2-lane paved road has been straightened some & raised above
the creek where flooding was problematical & 4 or 5 bridges have been
built over the years (have never counted same.) The roadbed straight up
from where I found the Mystery Iris is one of those spots where such
realignment has been done, most recently about 30 years back if I recall
correctly. Lots of fill rock & dirt were brought in by county crews to
do this & such "alien" fill might very well have included the original
rhizomes. What I find wonderous, if this is the source, is that the
rhizomes ended up close enough to the surface soil to grow & thrive!
Iris are a very persistant life form, which is fortunate for those
gardeners (moi) who aren't so persistant & caring for them sometimes.
