In a message dated 98-07-31 17:09:33 EDT, you write:
<< If you mulch the beds with about 3/4" COARSE builder's sand, almost all
frost heave will be prevented. The sand, unlike most mulches, allows the
roots to breathe and does not encourage rot. Side benefits? The sanded
beds look attractive, the sand reduces your weeding by about 85%, and when
it is time to divide, it makes a great amendment for clay soils.

John,
What a great idea. I had heard of this previously used with great success. I
hate bringing in more sand, however, since my entire yard is sand, sand, and
more sand.
I have to have dirt trucked in just to plant anything. I'll bet it looks nice
in the beds too.
