After an extreme case of soft rot and after reading in the world of
Iris of the method of removing roots and using the clorox bath as a
disinfectant, I tried it. Trimming all the roots sounded a bit odd but
having lost so many to rot I didn't want to chance any thing with new
ones.Since my new beds weren't ready yet, after clipping and soaking I
potted them up, pinning them in the pots with wire to keep them upright.
In a very short while I noticed roots growing out of the pots. So I dug
holes just large enough for the pots contents to fit into, firmed the
soil down well and some of the re-bloomers bloomed that fall. I don"t
always remove roots any more but even if I plant in July or August I
still pin every iris into the ground. With this method I have rarely
lost more than one or two plants a winter. I use either old clothes
hangers cut into 8 to 10 inch lengths or 12 guage wire the same length.
Bend into a U shape, place a "leg" on each side of the iris and push
down till the top of the U rests on the top of the rhizome.
