Lloyd,
The 1949 AIS Checklist gives Elma Miess's address as Syllmar Gardens, San
Fernando, CA (near Los Angeles). I believe that Ben Hager's Melrose Gardens
took its name from the original owner's surname. There is an iris called
IRMA MELROSE. Was that the person who started the garden in Stockton?
On another note, I recently read the local library's copy of "A Half
Century of Iris" by William McKee (published in 1954). With the recent
complete retirement of Chet Tompkins, I believe you are the only person
mentioned in that work who is still active in iris breeding.
