Hi John,
I too was concerned about the effect of heat and cold being transfered
thru the wire to the rhizome. As you know it can get very hot in the
Midwest and we don't cool off much at night. However I was more
concerned about using rocks or bricks as I thought the larger surface
might be more of a conductor of cold. I kept a close check both summer
and winter the first year I used this method. In the spring I could see
no signs of damage.I have been useing this method for more than five
years now and an added bonus is being able to easily see if there has
been any heave and thaw during the winter. I usually start checking in
February, and if needed can just push the wire back in the ground with
my foot. They seldom move much, but no air pocket is a good air pocket
for plants. :-)
