Re: Reblooming irises

Charles Bunge asks...

>Is there a list of reblooming irises, even one for the upper Midwest?

There is one cultivar that I will (almost) iron-clad guarantee for
difficult situations. But first a story...

I have a good friend living in Colorado Springs (elevation 6000+ feet) who
bought, planted and nutured rebloomer after rebloomer without one iota of
success. I sent him a start of this cultivar and it has not missed rebloom
from its first year in his garden onward. As I write, with our last rain on
the 21st of June, I can look out the window and ONE iris is in bloom in our
dusty garden. GOLDEN ENCORE (Frank Jones 1973) is that iris, the one which
I recommend for 'impossible situations.

It has tailored form by modern tastes, however its bright, vivid yellow
will draw you across the garden. G. Percy Brown's iris are often touted as
'cast iron' rebloomers. I believe that GOLDEN ENCORE far surpasses the
standard they have established for performance and, as a decided bonus,
exhibits good garden form and excellent 'carry' with its cheerful color.

To find GOLDEN ENCORE cataloged, you will have to peruse the offerings of
dedicated reblooming enthusiasts. Pursuit of hyper-modern form does have a
down side.

Cheers,
