TB:HIST: GLAD TIDINGS

From: <HIPSource@aol.com>

Steve asked:

<< A friend received an iris called GLAD TIDINGS. Does anyone have any
 >information on this iris? Color, hybridizer, year of introduction etc. I
 >will call them on the phone and give him the information.>>

And Celia responded:

<<<<<< Steve, did you get this info yet? I was locked up with Region 22 all
weekend or would have responded to your first request.

Found it in the '49 checklist, but it is the victim of an apparent typo.
There is no Whiting N. in the abbreviations list up front. There is a
Whiting E., one Mrs. Elizabeth Whiting. Perhaps her late husband's first
name began with an N? >>>>>>

The "N" following the hybridizer's name serves to indicate that the iris was
not (yet) introduced. See number 5 in the list of Explanations at the front of
the book. The presumption is that the iris was "registered" with AIS, but not
formally "introduced", that is introduced into commerce. Now, since this is
the 1949 Checklist this may or may not be so. Simply stated, this question
arises with some frequency in dealing with the 1949 Checklist and while I
don't know where the system broke down, it apparently did from time to time.
It took me forever to figure this out. And someone who knows about these
things, someone who will remain nameless, indicated my assessment was correct.

And the Elizabeth mentioned above who did some hybridizing looks to have been
an Elizabeth White. Whiting is probably Mrs. C.G. Whiting of Iowa, better
known as Agnes, who gave us some pretty remarkable irises, including TEA ROSE.

Tell him to take care of GLAD TIDINGS, Steve. As of the last published member
listing, HIPS did not have anyone reporting growing what they said was this
iris.
