Dennis,
What I suspect happened to Godzilla was a case of Sclerotium Rolfsii or
commonly called Southern Blight, Mustard Seed Fungus or Crown Rot. This
is a destructive fungus that is more prevalent in warm climate areas.
And it is well known in CA. Some people will not recognize it for what
it is and just notice the secondary symptoms which is a rot. But much
different than Erwinia. The most obvious difference is the rot has no
ordor. You were wise to give it a Bleach dip as this will kill the
fungus on the plant. Be careful, it still may be in the ground where
the plant was growing. The larger Godzilla must have had an advanced
case of it therefore it died. Next time this happens use the bleach dip
and let air dry for a few days. Treat the soil with Terraclor
(fungicide) if you can find it. Look for the brand Cooke's Fungicide
which contains 50 percent Terraclor. As with all chemicals be sure to
follow directions carefully.
