Re: LA: O'Connor Introductions

From: "Patrick O'Connor" <swamp@ix.netcom.com>

Walter, your post about my introductions got me out of procrastination mode
and into action. I spent considerable time the last several days trying to
fighre what I am actually going to register this year, after a long lapse.
My hybridizing has been in something of a hiatus, associated partly with a
move from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. (I still have an office in Baton
Rouge and commute about three days a week).

Thanks for the kind words about FELICIANA HILLS. It is a really clear pink
iris, and the most popular of the ten or so I have introduced. Some are
better in my opinion, but this is a good iris. The form leaves something
to be desired, but I think the flowers are gorgeous and it grows well for
me.

Of my new things, I have four that I am especially high on. One is a cross
of I. brevicaulis and DR. DORMAN, an older pink. The resulting seeding is
a short, well-branced purple with the white ray signal pattern of DR.
DORMAN. It grows like a weed, but won't win any awards. But it is one of
the best shorter (20 inches) Louisianas I have seen, and, I think, will be
a great garden iris for people.

Another is a cross of NOBLE MOMENT X SEA CONSUL. It is a tall blue that
resembles NOBLE MOMENT in coloration (great mid blue with nice light yellow
signals). NOBLE MOMENT, of course, is fairly short. The seedling has great
form and a much larger flower.

I have a sort of orangy thing out of (ANN CHOWNING X PRESIDENT HEDLEY) X
HIGH RANK that should be good. It is a beautiful color with great form.
I am not very good in figuring out words to describe some of the colors of
the Louisianas. Orangy is an official color, right?

And last, I am going to register a redish violet resulting from SOUTHERNER
X OUR PARRIS. Big flower, good form, ruffled....even the Australians would
be impressed, and they have a slew of beautiful irises.

I have not registered anything in a while and have a backlog of things I
expect to put out over the next couple of years. I only hybridize on a
small scale now, but hope to pick up the tempo in the next few years.
Space and time are my major limitations. And they are big ones.

I have names picked for these irises, but I won't mention them until I am
sure they are available.
