OT: Bio: Arnold Koekkoek

Depending on whether you were a subscriber to the old iris-l, this is
an introduction or re-introduction. I put myself on temporary hold last
May from the other list, which subsequently died, because the busy
garden season was starting, also because I was losing my office and
computer for a while. Why? Well, that's part of the introduction.
I retired in May after teaching for 41 years, the last 34 of them at
the below-listed college. This fall I shall teach one course as a
one-time shot, but plan to be fully retired after that. I don't do any
hybridizing (lack of the 3 essentials of time, space and patience), but
I love to see and acquire what others do. I've been an iris grower for
most of those 34 years, but I've been an AIS member for only about 10 of
them, and that's also the time I've been into growing in a serious and
ever bigger way.
Today our (my wife of 40 years, Carol, has gradually gotten hooked,
too) iris collection is approaching 500 varieties, mostly TBs, but also
a number of medians, one or 2 species, half a dozen spuria, and an
increasing number of Siberians. We have 4 children, 3 of them married,
and the oldest is gradually catching the iris bug, too.
Sioux Center is in the far northwest corner of Iowa, USDA zone 4, about
14 miles from South Dakota to the west and about 20 miles from Minnesota
to the north. It gets COLD here in winter, and right now the heat and
humidity are about as bad as it gets in summer, which is why I'm in my
air-conditioned office at the computer instead of in my garden preparing
a space to plant my most recent acquisitions.
Looking forward to being part of the iris-talk.
