I too live on hard clay, and find that it is much easier to work if it has a
*little* moisture in it. To much and it turns to sticky muck - great for
making bricks. I use 12" raised beds. I set them at ground level then dug down
6-8 inches.

Personally I like 4' wide beds. Then I can get 3 rows spaced 12" apart. Easy
to reach the center row from either side. The length of my beds is 25' because
of the configuration of my garden. But length could be whatever you want.
