Greetings All!
I have read the many and varied comments about
this subject with great interest. While we are very small in comparison to
some nurseries, we also provide gift Iris with all orders. We look at what
the customer has ordered and (say if they are all pink and while Louisianas) we
try and provide them with a gift that fits in with what they have asked
for. If they have advised that they are new to Louisiana Iris we try to
give them one of our "unkillable" varieties to encourage them to grow
more because they get good results. A gift can be something treasured or not -
it depends on how it is given and how it is received.
Some folk, when ordering, give away a little
hint about why they have chosen a particular variety and if we can, we like to
provide them with a gift that fits in. If you garden is all blue, then a
yellow gift is about as useful as an ashtray on a motor bike!
One dear lady in WA (Western Australia) ordered
our JAZZ HOT but advised that the was going to order "Gentle Alice"
next time because that was her name. Being a pensioner she could only
afford to buy one at a time. We sent her "Gentle Alice" as a
gift - and have made a life long friend! She calls us regularly to keep us
posted on how the Iris are doing.
Yes, economics must play a part in any
commercial concern, but doing something special for a customer should not be
just counted for its $ and cents value. Without customers you don't have a
business!
Cheers from a wet and soggy Sydney. Oz.
