My computer has been disconnected for almost a week while we put together a new computer desk and rearranged the room--didn't realize how addicted I had become to reading the iris-talk every day--finally back and reading the messages from the past week--really interesting and a different perspective to read many days messages at once--the discussion about bonus iris is truly educational! With the first order when I received bonus iris--I was delighted--since this has been happening for many years now, I am used to receiving bonuses, and feel disappointed when I do not receive at least one with a large order; I usually say--any in the ' ' color range and let the sender decide-- I have many which I never would have ordered, and aam glad they were sent--I usually send a note with the order the next year, telling the sender how the different ones are doing--since the weather here is enough to wipe out the less hardy, this information is of interest to the senders--many of whom I have seen at national AIS meeting, and most of them state that they like the reports--
Do you not have a friend who you could give and extra bonus to? There are many in our club who are on very tight budgets and cannot afford to order new ones but need to be growing them--as they are judges--so many in our club share their extras with them--this way they are growing newer ones, and you can visit them and see how the iris are doing--without having the specific ones in your own garden--and be able to vote for them for the various AIS awards--
Other plant suppliers give extras--the practice is not just with the Iris growers--big nurseries like Gurneys and Burpees give extras--more than the ones earned by buying a certain amount to receive the extras listed--
I believe firmly in the saying " I have never met an Iris I didn't like"--but some of them I like in someone else's garden better than mine--so I give away an extra which I think I will not like in my yard, and sometimes I wish I hadn't!
The poem from Zelma in the August 21 notes ( I receive mine in digest form) is truly a wonderful poem-- can hardly wait till I can include it in a regional newsletter--
Think I'll also figure out someway to post it at the club garden so many can enjoy it--
Carryl in Western Montana--where autumn has now arrived--cooler nights and days, thunder boomers daily, and a feeling that if I don't get the rest of my Iris planted today, they will not have time to grow before winter is here--
Here we have two seasons--Winter, and Road Construction--you in the warmer areas have no idea what it is like to have most roads in the area under construction--and dust clouds all over everything!
