Re: Overwintering Potted Iris
From: koekkoek@dordt.edu (Arnold Koekkoek)
Well, I can tell you that a few years ago I bought a couple cheapies at
the local Wal-Mart very, very late in Oct., much too late to plant
outside here in NW Iowa. I put them in pots, kept them in my basement
all winter under light (and it was much warmer than the 45-50 deg. you
mention), and next spring they went into the garden. Or, rather, one
went into the garden. I killed the other by giving it too much water
during its basement tenure. But I conclude that you should be able to
do the same safely, with the provision of light. Of course, I don't
know about that factor.
I planted a lot of Siberians in the garden very late in Oct. last year,
as that's when they came to me. I gave them lots of water, and when the
cold came, as it soon did, I gave a good thick mulch there.
All of those made it through the winter, not one loss. I realize these
are not bearded iris, but I would think the treatment might work as well
for them, too. LOTS of mulch would be a major key to survival, as well
as its removal when growth begins in the spring. Surely there will be
others who have more experience with beardeds in this circumstance, tho.
