My favourite was a single stalk of wheat which grew from a seed in the
straw mulch. It grew over 6 ft high, supported by the alternating
railings of a timber fence, finally popping over the top of the fence
where it flowered and set seed. The children collected it and pinned it
up on the wall inside.
