Ensicolor
From: "Maureen Mark (Zone 4b Ottawa)" <mmark@home.com>
Now that I've had a chance to read the AIS bulletin, I now know what has
triggered the interest in ensicolors.
Tony Huber has advanced the work of Oleg A. Amekhin. Through a large number of
versicolor-ensata crosses, he was able to obtain a few fertile crosses that he
calls versatas. He then crossed again with ensata to produce what he calls
biversata which are highly fertile with ensata. The first cultivars that he
registered are NOUVEL AGE and BELLE PROMESSE. For those who may be tempted to
try, Tony recommends not crossing back to versicolor as the chromosome count
differences are too large.
Tony explained at the JI symposium that his fertile biversatas are the
culmination of an almost 20-year breeding program. He provided many more
details on his breeding program that I could not digest at the time. Anyone
interested should contact him directly.
