preen, preen 'n green, other weed chemicals

From: Forthgb@aol.com

would love some advice on the use of weed chemicals on iris.

i have read some posts regarding preen and other various chemicals used on
iris. husband used round-up or round-up type on the iris bed one year and
they either did not bloom or the blooms were very sickly. read the preen 'n
green label and iris were not listed as being 'safe' from the product. can't
recall the exact wording but it seems that one of the purposes of p&g was to
prevent the sprouting of grasses and other rhizome-forming weeds. since iris
are rhizomes, i didn't use it on the iris bed. but i need to use something.
between the rain, long growing season, good soil (trucked in topsoil/manure),
we fight a mostly losing battle against weeds. called schreiner's one time,
couldn't get an answer from them for what they used.

i have only been on iris-talk for a short time, but have been very impressed
with conduct, generosity, and quality of advice from the members.
