Hi Linda, I appreciate your desire for privacy, it's just nice to talk
to a person with a name. Remember my name, or anyone elses on the list,
may be an alias. I think though, that most go by their real names and
many people on this list know each other personally. You may meet some
yourself if you join up with a local Iris group.
My personal experience with weed killers is simply this: I have used
'Zero' once as an annual path weeder, with reasonable success. I will
use it again, with trepidation, as I keep pets. I have seen animals die
in agony from ingesting pesticides and weedicides.
Weeding my garden is done by hand or shovel. If the job is too great, I
have been known to remove everything from a garden bed, cover the whole
area with a heavy layer of newsprint and straw, and let the weeds die in
agony. This is probably a good method for irises which are regularly dug
and replanted. I suppose it is similar to solarization, and the heavy
mulch needs to remain in place for about a year. If you top the straw
with compost and manure, you can actually grow a vegetable crop on top
of the mulched bed.
Others with more experience might answer your specific problems re
weedicides.
Cheers, Jan Clark, the little Aussie weeder.
