I am a member of a gardening list that has 3000 members, with about 10% posting. No subject tags are used. There will be a post such as" MERRY CHRISTMAS" with 20 "RE: MERRY CHRISTMAS" after 3 or 4 post following the thread, the thread is lost. It makes very hard reading or knowing what to delete or read.
It took this list to make me understand how great SUBJECT TAGS are on iris-talk.

None of the lists i am on are large enough, or have enough traffic for there
to be a problem, but most prefer to stick to a clear subject, and change
subject headings as the conversation drifts. This is common courtesy to the
many busy people using these lists for exchange of information.
Interestingly, it seems to be the lurkers, more often than the regulars, who
complain if things get out of hand:-)
