Re: Re: HYB: ploidy
Slight change in subject.
I like IB's, and would love to learn not just which ones are fertile, but
also what their ploidies are. I'll definitely go back and look that
discussion. [Of course I like the "old-looking" ones best, which puts me
outside the norm, and usually the cultivars I like best get very little
attention or discussion.]
Has there ever been a move to make ploidy information part of
registrations. I think it would be nice if the information was included
with other registration information, at least where it is known. I realize
that counting all the cultivars may not be practical, but I know there have
been a lot that have been counted, and the information is often buried or
at least very obscure. The only listings I've seen are very old, and very
limited in the number of cultivars included.
This information would tell a lot about breeding potential, compatibility,
and even potentially ancestry.
As an aside, I find it interesting that the Daylilies are pretty much all
listed as to ploidy. I wonder if there is an assigned daylily chromosome
counter, or if it is just all assumption (or somewhere in between). Just
because a plant's parents were both known diploids, doesn't mean the
offspring will all be diploids (and the same logic can be extended to all
other ploidies).
