Re: Re: OT-PLANTS: 'taters

Neil, how did you manage to enter the tater market so late in life, being
from Idaho? I remember picking taters when a two row digger was "big" and a
large grower had 13 acres. We grew "certified seed" for a few years so a large
part of my summer was spent "rogueing" (removing any diseased plants). In our
own home garden we grew Red Potomoc's and later Nordlands (both reds).
If a person has grown potatoes in their garden very often they likely have
all the pathogens that any store bought tater has. The key is rotation. Never
plant potatoes where you grew potatoes the year before. A good thing to
rotate to is peas or beans since they put some nitrogen back in the soil. A poor
choice is corn since both are heavy feeders. Another "NO NO" is don't plant
your own seed potatoes, that is ones from your own garden.

George Mason Portland, Or. Where we have SNOW on the ground. I thought I
left it and taters in Idaho.
