HYB:More on Thoughts on Clarence

Lloyd, I am glad you offered the feedback and comments.

Joe Ghio, when asked about TIME ZONE and UTAH VALLEY as zonals of perhaps
different sorts, and their relationship to the various plicata alleles,
commented about both Time Zone and Utah Valley. He said:

"Re Time Zone. It is a zonal (Keith [Keppel] is still trying to come up with
an exact definition of zonal, and was hard at work on it this spring). TZ has
hint of dots at the hafts and on the reverse side of the falls as did Utah
Valley as I remember. jjg" ---[Emphasis mine, not jjg's]

Following his comments, I enlarged his on-line photo of TIME ZONE until it
began to lose so much definition further increase would not be fruitful. The
pigments in both standards and falls have a slight feathering into the white
zone, and a similar faint feathering of the white into the colored zone. In
an ordinary glance at normal size the edge of the zone is quite sharp.

I don't think this is an artifact of the photography-plus-computer
manipulation of the image. I think that the luminata-look to the precise edge
of change has significance about the relationship of at least this sort of
zonal to luminata.

I think a similar examination of CLARENCE might be useful. Where might I find
a high-definition photo, say on the order of 400 pixel or more, of the
variety? I'm sure there must be numerous photos floating around, both on-line
and in Iris-talk/Iris-photo members. I have yet to do a search of
Iris-photos, but that is my next step.

The real test of the relationship, however, will come in watching progeny from
various types of crosses with zonals. I would think a cross with LAST LAUGH
of either CLARENCE or TIME ZONE, or both, might be especially interesting. If
there is no kinship between the fall pattern of Last Laugh from either, or if
the two behave quite differently from each other in this cross, we might learn
a thing or two. Then, again, we might be more confused than ever....

What we do already know is that Clarence does breed luminatas and glaciatas.
Considering the ancestry of Time Zone I would think Joe's new zonal would do
the same.
