HYB:Zonals--comparing photos of TIME ZONE and CLARENCE

There are five good photos of CLARENCE that are brought up by a search of
Iris-photos for "Clarence" --but none if the search order is "photo
'Clarence'"---

In any event, the photos examined include those posted by Sandra Barss, Gina
Sideris, LaurieF, T. Greaves and Lloyd Zurbrigg himself--a clump view.

The one with the strongest color contrast is that from farthest north--Barss'
photo.  That may be consistent with some research on possible anthocyanin
pigment development in relation to temperature, but has no bearing on the
question of zonal vs. luminata.

In each of the photos there is a fairly wide zone of feathering between the
white and the anthocyanin, but in only one is there the slightest suggestion
of pattern.  On one photo only is there a scattering of white dots in the
solid area with no apparent arrangement--possibly an artifact of the
reproduction process.

In the standards, however, the presence of anthocyanins, although faint, do
show an effect suggestive of luminata.  The penetration of anthocyanin
synthesis through the I(s) dominant amoena factor is quite normal at lower
dosage levels.  In some amoena-plicatas the plicata pattern is richly
expressed in the fall,  and weakly, but definitely, in the standards.
MONOLOGUE is an example of this.

I say "suggestive" above since the anthocyanins in the standards are very
weakly expressed and only show in some of the photos, probably of the most
freshly opened blooms.  In others the standards appear completely white.

The zone of transition is like that of TIME ZONE, but broader.  I would have
to come down on the side of amoena-zonal based on this, as there is not the
slightest suggestion of luminata light vein, darker inter-vein patterning in
the solid area.
