What if, just supposing, zonals (genetically) were, first of all, fully
luminata, or luminata-plus-glaciata, but with a gene at a separate locus that
was responsible for obscuring the vein and between-the-vein distribution of
anthocyanins.
Genes at a separate locus having an effect on a process are not unknown.
There's even a term for such--they are "epistatic" genes, examples of which
are both the dominant "I" (inhibitor), and "I(s)" (Progenitor, etc.) dominant
amoena factor. There is nothing to suggest they are part of the
Delphinidin/Violanin producing sequence itself.
I would think such a genetic factor as I am suggesting may have to be a
recessive and have the effect most strongly at work from the distal (far end)
part of the petal inward and running out of steam along the way to account for
what both Dave and I have noticed.
If this is true, if a zonal or amoena-zonal were crossed with any type of
plicata, all--every one--of the seedlings would be some form of plicata,
anywhere from glaciata to full plicata or luminata-plicata, which is what has
been observed with CLARENCE and used to support an argument that it is an
amoena-luminata.
Crossed with something else that carried the "zonal" external factor in at
least two doses, zonals could appear in at least some of the progeny, the rest
being plicatas of some sort.
The ancestry of TIME ZONE has only CITY LIGHTS as the obvious source of the
zonal effect in its ancestry. All the others, to the best of what I can
interpret from the Check List descriptions, sound like plicatas, which is not
to say the "zonal" recessive could not be tagging along hidden in the genome
of other ancestors.
It would be interesting to know what the siblings of TIME ZONE looked like,
but I am well aware that UTAH VALLEY emerged from VICTORIA FALLS-type
ancestors, not plicatas. TIME ZONE's siblings apparent type might not tell us
much anything.
Unpeeling this onion may take some doing.
